The 2009 QJRU QR RailSmart State Championships kicked off at Nudgee College on July 2, with approximately 1200 players competing in 170 matches over four days of competition.

The tournament included 17 teams from Brisbane and 29 from regional Queensland: Bundaberg and Fraser Coast, Townsville, Darling Downs, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Cairns and Rockhampton, as well as Northern Territory and Papua New Guinea. Over 600 participants came from outside the Brisbane Metropolitan area.
The Championships, which featured teams from Under 13, U14, U15, U16 and U18s, are an important talent identification opportunity for future selection of players in Queensland representative teams and squads.
