QAS Academy players James Slipper and Andrew Shaw support the QR Reds 'Goat Count for Africa" initiative.

It could be raining goats when the QR Reds open their South African campaign with the match against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday morning (3am) Queensland time.

As a fund-raising initiative for the charity Oxfam, the Reds will sponsor the donation of one farm goat for every try they score - plus a “bonus goat” should the team earn a four try bonus point.

The goats will be purchased through the Oxfam Unwrapped initiative helping communities in Mozambique with a source of food and milk.Goats are only provided to communities where goat keeping is a traditional way of life. Oxfam also provides training in keeping animals, vaccination and de-worming.

Reds winger Blair Connor and QAS Reds Academy players James Slipper, Andrew Shaw and Albert Anae were on hand for the launch of the initiative, which the Reds are also hoping will be supported by fans.

The QR Reds Goat tally will be kept on display in a variety of venues across Brisbane with the final number being released on the team’s return.
