12 Round 03 16

University triumphed 16-12 and kept Brothers tryless in Round 3 of Queensland Premier Rugby at Crosby Park.

The win broke a six year hoodoo for the Students at Crosby Park and was their first win over Brothers in four years.

Although the rain that had hung around all day held off for the match, the sodden turf was a factor in keeping the game's opening play stuck predominantly in mid-field, with University's Chris Borrel slotting two penalty kicks off the back of poor Brothers discipline to give the visitors a good start.

Brothers hit back with a penalty of their own from flyhalf, Dallan Murphy to close the gap and he added another in a penalty shoot-out to even the ledger.

The trench-warfare looked set to continue until Uni tied some nice phase play together and worked some slick hands down the shortside to give scrumhalf Ian Prior a try to take the lead into halftime.

University picked up where they left off in the first half with some more positive play yielding a penalty and then a  try to hooker James Hanson from a solid rolling-maul from a lineout.

Facing a growing deficit Brothers claimed another successful penalty from the boot of Murphy and valiantly continued to pepper the University line with all they could muster, but Uni's defence enabled them to hold out for a 16-12 win.

Brothers coach Zane Hilton was disappointed with the team's third successive loss.

"It's very hard to win a game when you don't win your line-outs," he said.

"Nowadays we're seeing far more line-outs than scrums and you just can't let yourself be dominated in that area."

Hilton had nothing but praise for the University side, especially their captain, Hanson, who led from the front.

Hanson was delighted to break the Brothers' hoodoo of recent years.

"We've not won a game against Brothers since 2006 and the last time we won here (Crosby Park) was in 2004, so it was good to get over the line today," Hanson said.

"We've got plenty to work on for next week's game, our focus and mental attitude has to be up for next week."

Uni will face GPS next weekend and Brothers will travel away to play Easts.
