2009 Grand Finalists Souths scored four tries to three to beat Gold Coast 24-22 at Albert Park in Round 4 of Queensland Premier Rugby.
Souths' defence proved a game breaker, while the home side failed to play as a team and let themselves down with handling errors.
The Breakers game was summed up by an attacking raid with minutes to go that could have secured a win, but they dropped the ball and any hope of a comeback.
Souths' coach Dan McKellar said the Magpies' back row all contributed to putting the pressure on, while the performance of wing Ashley Ketchell also drew praise.
“Ashley Ketchell, the smallest guy on the field but with the biggest heart by a mile,” McKellar said of the try scorer,
“We weren’t perfect by any stretch but there were some really good signs," McKellar said of the team's performance.
Breakers Head Coach Tom Rosewarne lamented the costly lack of team work and poor handling by the home side.
“We need to take some pride and stop playing as individuals,” said Rosewarne.
“At the end we were pretty disappointed, we felt we had our chances to win it, let it slip past us with poor play, we will need to pick ourselves up and start again,” he said.
