26 Round 01 29

GPS came back from a 21-10 second half deficit to defeat Souths 29-26 in Round 1 of Queensland Premier Rugby at Souths' Chipsy Wood Oval.

The victory also gave GPS The Caxton Cup, put up for challenge by Souths after they carried it over to the new season as final winners for 2009.

Souths dominated first half possession and territory in the first half but a combination of good GPS defence and Souths' handling errors meant the two sides turned for the second half with GPS 10-7 ahead.

Souths came back fighting after the break to push the score to 21 -10 in their favour, but again GPS rallied to overtake the Magpies and claim a bonus point victory.

Souths coach Dan McKellar was disappointed with the final result after his side had opportunities to win.

“Disappointing, we were 21-10 and in position to win the game and we just kept giving them invitations to get back into the game - and they took them,” he said.

GPS coach Matt Pini said he was “happy that we won, but I think that both teams would be disappointed with their ball control”.

“It was very scratchy, a lot of penalties, with people obviously getting used to the new rules and things like that.”

The Caxton Cup is put up for challenge in each of the 18 competition rounds of Premier Rugby, with prizes to be won each week and at the end of the season.

Every week the holder places the cup on the line against that week’s opponent. Whoever holds the trophy at the end of the year becomes that year's champion.
