The QAS Reds 2nd XV scored a 48-7 win over a Queensland Premier XV squad at Suncorp tonight with QR Reds wingers Blair Connor and Luke Morahan both crossing the paint twice.
Despite the contest being a tight affair in the second half, the experience and class of a Reds 2nd XV squad that included nine Reds contracted players proved too much.
Connor and Morahan scored their tries in the first half to give the Reds an insurmountable 29-0 lead at halftime, although it was the squad's defence which was the catalyst for their win.
On numerous occasions the Premier XV put together multiple phases close to the line only to be rejected by some enthusiastic scrabbling efforts. They were finally awarded for their persistence late in the match when a backrow scrum move allowed flanker Jono Ellis to cross in the corner.
After missing the entire preseason with an injury, Reds number eight Leroy Houston was dynamic in his first match of 2010, scoring a try in the dying minutes to cap off a strong game.
For the Premier XV flyhalf Dallan Murphy and centre Michael Bond both put in strong performances.
The all-Reds front row of captain James Hanson, Greg Holmes and Dayna Edwards dominated at scrum time, with lock Rob Simmons scoring the game's first try after the Premier XV were unable to control the ball at the back of the scrum.
Connor and Morahan then took control of the match to give their side a strong lead at the break, while Houston, flanker Lei Tomiki and scrumhalf Sam Grasso all scored second half tries.
