Queensland Schoolboys

Each year the Queensland Rugby Football Schools Union selects schoolboy teams to participate in regional and national titles.

The highlight of 2006 was the performance of the Queensland 2 team in winning the national championships in Sydney in July.

After more than a decade of having a significant gap between the number 1 and number 2 state teams a decision was made to select players on a 1-15 and 16-30 basis before the selection of reserves.

As well as evening up the competition, this also gave more playing time to players who were selected for Queensland 2, rather than as reserves for Queensland 1.

The teams were chosen from a series of Queensland Schoolboy trials at Ballymore at the end of Term 2. As part of these trials two teams were selected from each of G.P.S., A.I.C. and C.S.S. schools, and these six teams then played a series of round robin games over three days before the two state teams were selected.

From the National Championships the following Queensland players were selected to play for Australian teams in 2006:
• Australia - Tonga, Fiji and New Zealand: Quade Cooper, Luke Evans, Rod Davies, Kane Hollingsworth, Rob Simmons, Ben Tapuai and James Waterman
• Australia ‘A’ - Tonga: Phil Braban, John Dalton,  Rob Gray, Jesse Hogg, Tom Murday, Luke Morehan, Matt Page, Pat Ritchie and Aidan Toua

In 2006 the QRFSU also staged the Under 18 State Regional Championships in Gympie in May and the Under 15 State Regional Championships in August at St Patrick’s playing fields at Shorncliffe.
