Coach Accreditation

Level 1 Coach

The Level 1 "course" of previous years has now been superceded by the mandatory SmartRugby, which is the ARU's occupational health & safety program, as part of a "Foundation" course - a certificate course which provides a basic structure for coaching & officiating. It is recommended that individuals who wish to gain ASC accreditation attend a Foundation Course.  All accreditation lasts for 4 years and all coaches must maintain their SmartRugby qualification every 2 years.

Complete the following process for Level 1 Coach Accreditation:

  1. Complete SmartRugby (current qualification)
  2. Complete Registration Form
  3. Complete Exam - Law & Coaching Exam (90% pass)
  4. Complete a Field Assessment (training session) - contact QRU (3354 9330) with a date, time and venue
  5. Cost: $44

Note: To complete your Level 1 Coach Accreditation you must be 18 years of age.

Level 2 Coach

This course is designed for senior coaches. As such there is a greater emphasis both on the tactical aspects of each part of the game as well as the technical skills required to choose such options. It is the aim that all accredited Level 2 coaches are creative as well as being knowledgeable so that the game can benefit from the individual enterprise of both themselves and their players.

  1. Current Level 1 Coach Accreditation/SmartRugby Compliance
  2. Complete the Application Form
  3. Complete 7 tasks
    • Attendance at weekend seminar
    • Level 2 exam
    • Match analysis
    • Coaching diary
    • Field assessment (training session)
  4. Cost: $440
    • Resources supplied

Level 3 Coach

This course is specifically for coaches at elite /advanced levels. As such there is a greater emphasis on advanced technical aspects and tactical aspects of rugby sports science and its impact on the game. It is the aim that all accredited Level 3 coaches are creative as well as being knowledgeable so that the game can benefit from the individual enterprise of both themselves and their players.

  1. Current Level 2 Coach Accreditation/SmartRugby qualification
  2. Complete the Application Form
  3. Complete 13 tasks
    • Attend seminar - Australian Institute of Sport (3 days)
    • Development a national rugby team program (workbook)
    • Periodised plan
    • Attend seminar - Sydney (3 days)
    • Complete recovery pack questions
    • Complete level 2 law exam
    • Complete one training plan and three player evaluations
    • Coaching diary
    • Complete 4 coach evaluations (2 on your mentor coach, 2 completed by mentor on you)
    • 30 minute video of a training session for assessment
    • 2 player assessments (international players)
    • Complete a referee evaluation
    • Submit a 1500 word written assignment
