Dragons and Sydney Uni to contest club title
2007 Trinity Rugby Premiers Sunnybank and their Sydney counterparts Sydney University will contest the Australian Club Championship as a curtain raiser to Saturday's Investec Super 14 match between the QR Reds and Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium.
The interclub match was a regular fixture during the 1990s but dropped out of favour until it was revived last year as an early season Super 14 curtain raiser at Suncorp Stadium.
Sydney University defeated Wests easily in that match and are back again to defend the trophy against Sunnybank.
Although the Super 14 season is still going, Sydney University has confirmed that young Waratah backs Alfie Mafi and Daniel Halangahu and the Brumbies Leo Afeaki will be available for the match, along with Australian Sevens representatives Tim Davidson, Mitch Inman and Lachlan Rosengreen.
Sunnybank will field England Sevens specialist Ben Gollings at flyhalf and QR Reds squad members Ole Avei (hooker) and Rob Simmons (lock).
Sydney Uni remain unbeaten in the 2008 Tooheys New Cup Shute Shield competition while Sunnybank are just outside the Trinity Premier top four as the field approaches the halfway mark.
Kickoff is at 5.15pm on Saturday, May 17 at Suncorp Stadium.
