Jones names Barbarian lineup

The Oaks Group presents the 2008 Australian Barbarians
Friday, 11 July 2008

England Sevens star Ben Gollings will captain the Australian Barbarians against David Croft's Queensland XV in Sunday's Oaks Group back to Ballymore match in Brisbane.

The goal kicking flyhalf, who plays for Sunnybank in the Queensland Trinity Premier Rugby competition, was chosen by coach Alan Jones for his communications skills in one of the key positions on the field.

Jones and co-coach Alec Evans settled on their starting side this afternoon.

A reshuffle on the bench meant a callup for young Brothers backrower Andrew Shaw, son of former Wallaby Tony Shaw, who could well come up against his brother Liam who's on the bench for the Queensland side.

As expected, Jones named robust Tongan backrower Epi Taione at inside centre, where he expects him to take on the defence and stand strong in the maul.

"I hope the other side know how to tackle," Jones said.

Australian Services Rugby Union back Zane Mitchell, brother of Wallaby wing Drew, is at outside centre with England World Cup wing Dan Luger on one flank and giant Australian U20 and Waratahs wing Ratu Siganiyavi on the other.

Queensland captain David Croft will face the aggressive Waratahs flanker Beau Robinson, with former All Black Scott Robertson at blindside flanker.

On the bench former Wallaby Andrew Walker was a late callup for the injured Nathan Williams.

The team is (from fullback): Mark Gerrard (Brumbies), Ratu Siganiyavi (Waratahs), Zane Mitchell (Aust Services), Epi Taione (Tonga), Dan Luger (England), Ben Gollings (England Sevens) (C), Sam Cordingley (QR Reds), Toutai Kefu (Kubota, Japan), Beau Robinson (Waratahs), Scott Robertson (NZ), Mitchell Chapman (Brumbies), Sitaleki Timani (Brumbies), Salesi Maafu (Brumbies), Jeremy Paul (Gloucester), Pek Cowan (Force). Reserves: Dan Palmer (Waratahs), John Ulugia (Brumbies), Jason Harrington (Aust Services), Andrew Shaw (Brothers), Moses Rauluni (Fiji), Gonzalo Quesada (Argentina), Andrew Walker (QR Reds).

The referee is Ian Smith from NSW.

The match kicks off at 3:30pm.
