Qld U16s prepare for national titles at Nudgee

Alec Evans oversees the Qld U16 Red scrum
Thursday, 25 September 2008

Queensland's two U16 sides are in camp at Ballymore this week preparing for next week's National U16 Championships at St Joseph's Nudgee College.

Veteran forwards specialist Alec Evans was one of the experienced coaches who lent a hand during the camp, helping former Wallaby Garrick Morgan put the Queensland Red group forwards through some pick and drive and scrum drills.

The ARU-supported National U16 Championship is the first step toward playing elite rugby in Australia, with players looking to develop their on-field abilities and gain a better understanding of the off-field demands of the modern professional game.

Twelve teams participate in two Divisions, with the two Queensland sides competing in Division 1 for the Rod Macqueen Shield.

In their opening games on Monday, second seeded Queensland Red will play the seventh seeded Brumbies at 10:30am on Wilkes Oval at Nudgee, while the fourth seeded Queensland White will play fifth seed Victoria in the last match of the day at 3:10pm on Ross Oval.

The Division One teams (seeded on the basis of 2007 results) are:

NSW Schools
Queensland Red
Sydney Juniors
Queensland White
Victoria
Western Australia
Brumbies and
NSW Country

The teams competing in the Division 2 - John Eales Shield are:

National Indigenous
South Australia
Tasmania
Northern Territory

The ARU subsidises the cost of travel, meals and accommodation for players, coaches, physios and team management. This ensures the best players and management from around Australia have the chance to play in the tournament, regardless of their economic situation.

Apart from hosting 18 games of rugby, the Championships is a residential-style camp designed to educate the players, coaches, managers, referees and physiotherapists through a series of professional development workshops and skill development sessions.  The Championships provides an excellent opportunity to conduct athlete testing and research which provides valuable data into adolescent athletes.

The Championships also provides the perfect platform to identify talented young players who have the potential to rise through the ranks of Schoolboys, Under 19's and Under 21's up to Super 14 and Wallaby level.
